The 7 Line in the news

by Darren on May 15th, 2012 at 10:08 am

Yesterday CBS New York ran a story on their website about the possibility of the Mets preparing a long term deal for David Wright.

What’s crazy about the story is that they actually opened it with two paragraphs about me and The 7 Line in reference to last year with the “Don’t Trade Reyes” campaign.

FROM CBS New York:

“Remember last season’s day in, day out Jose Reyes drama?

It seems The 7 Line entrepreneur Darren Meenan’s popular “Don’t Trade Reyes” sign could be seen nightly at Citi Field. After the deadline, some Mets fans wore T-shirts imploring their All-Star shortstop to “Please Stay Jose.” Of course, when it was all said and done, Reyes signed with Miami. He never even received a formal offer from New York.

The ballpark in Flushing may look and feel the same this summer with another homegrown superstar’s future in question.

Then again, maybe it won’t.”

Just goes to show the power a t-shirt and some signs can have over the local big market media. I don’t use the word “power” as an ego thing… the fans are what spread the word. They had the power to get the message out to every ball park the Mets played in last summer. I got the ball rolling and everyone ran with it. Fans showed up in Detroit, LA, Texas, Florida, Washington and a few other parks with their own shirts and signs blaring. People united over this movement and it was awesome to see so much motivation and passion from the fans.

As we all know the Mets didn’t trade Reyes. They also didn’t sign him so the point was made but the end result wasn’t what we had hoped. It was crazy to see how fast it spread and it’s even crazier that it’s still getting press almost a year later.

I truly hope the Mets sign Wright. Some people are nervous that this fast start won’t last and the second he signs a deal his numbers will plummet. Odds are this pace wont go to October without some cold streaks, which is expected, but either way Wright is a leader whether the team is winning or losing. You surely won’t see a Francisco meltdown from Wright. We need someone like him in the lineup and clubhouse day in and day out. A cool head from a man that tries to say and do the right thing. We have potential to build around Wright and let the pieces come together to get back on top.

PAY WRIGHT! LGM!

Davis, Turner, Rauch and The 7 Line

by Darren on May 6th, 2012 at 11:42 am

I posted these photos on our instagram account but if you don’t follow us on Twitter or Facebook you haven’t seen em yet.

So far this season the Mets players have been huge supporters of The 7 Line brand. It’s pretty crazy to see the dudes rocking the tees and being so public about it. By now most die hard fans know of The 7 Line and it’s awesome that the players themselves took notice and like the tees enough to wear them.

Mets rocking The Duda-Bides tees!

by Darren on April 29th, 2012 at 12:17 pm

I dropped off a box of tees on Thursday before the team head out on the road. In the stack were our new tees, THE DUDA-BIDES.

Writer Andy McCullough of The Star Ledger caught wind of them wearing the shirts and added it to his story about Duda and his big night in Colorado.

Read the full story HERE and also follow him on Twitter @McCulloughSL

Get your shirt HERE.

Good lookin out Andy! Thanks!

Scavenger Hunt Winner!

by Darren on April 20th, 2012 at 2:27 pm

I occasionally run online contests to give prizes away to our Facebook and Twitter followers. I wanted to take the contest idea a step further to incorporate social media while encouraging the participants to get off their ass to go search for something.

Every order that leaves our warehouse gets a discount code for the customers next order. The code is usually set to 10% off. The discount code in this envelope was for 99% off and gave the lucky person who found it the option to get any three items they’d like from the website. To sweeten the deal Strawberry’s Sports Grill in Douglaston, owned by Mets LEGEND Darryl Strawberry tossed in a gift certificate for the winner as well.

At sundown I started to Tweet and post clues on the Facebook page as to where the envelope was left. I planted it earlier then went home to post the clues from my computer.

CLUES:

I’m somewhere in NY. In a PARK.

I’m closer to the Nassau County border than Manhattan.

There’s a highway and a couple bridges close by.

A Mets players last name is in my towns name.

There are a few fields here and even a roller hockey rink.

Look for a grass field EAST of the roller hockey rink. If you’re there you are VERY close.

LAST CLUE: The envelope is somewhere in this photo. Good luck!

If you followed the clues you would know that the envelope was left in the park next to Fort Totten. At the base of the Throgs Neck Bridge in Bayside, NY.

My buddy Enzo took the drive over there and said he saw at least 10 people milling through the park looking for the envelope. I wasn’t sure how many people would be on the hunt so I didn’t stick around to watch. I figured it may take all night and I had a few things to catch up on back at home. I am going to document the next one and interview the winner when they find it. I think it would be a pretty cool video piece that the fans may get a kick out of.

This was fun! Thank you to everyone who participated and congrats to Nick Vigorito for finding the package! It was taped underneath the picnic table that you can vaguely see in the photograph. He found it within about an hour and a half from clue #1.

If you don’t live close by.. not to worry, The 7 Line Army spans the length of the world and we will be planting cards in other states and countries with the help of our loyal customers who live there.

Keep your eyes pealed! We’ll be doing this once a week! In order to get in on the fun you need to FOLLOW ON TWITTER and LIKE ON FACEBOOK! That’s the only way you’ll know where to look. HAPPY HUNTING!

Fan of the night: Sean Sullivan

by Darren on April 11th, 2012 at 9:25 am

I met Sean Sullivan aka @spsully712 last season at Citi Field. It was a gloomy weeknight and we chopped it up over multiple beers up in the Pepsi Porch deck area. I had a few too many that night and if my memory serves me right, he had the Alcohol Compliance guys tell him to chill out with the heckling of some opposing fans. I’m sure he wasn’t overly rude, just the normal smack talk you’d expect when seeing other teams colors on our turf.

A month or so later he wore our 9/21 Piazza t-shirt “tears to cheers” shirt underneath his tux during his wedding and we’ve met up numerous times at Strawberry’s in Douglaston and at random games. I can tell the guy is genuinely a nice dude and I’m happy he is part of The 7 Line community.

Last night he was hitting the stadium during the new T-shirt Tuesday promotion at Citi Field and decided to make this sign to give props to both MetsPolice.com for coming up with the #IMWITH28 hash tag and us for printing the t-shirts. We only have a few left in stock but plan on making more soon.

After Murphs lackluster performance in the field, and quiet bat I think Sully is retiring from the sign game for good. Way to blow the undefeated season man! Kidding….. LGM! KEEP CALM AND CHEER ON!

Here an 8. There an 8. Everywhere an 8.

by Darren on April 7th, 2012 at 9:00 am

I was so happy to see the amount of support the crowd had for Gary Carter and his family on Opening Day. Everywhere I looked I saw an 8. Either a Carter Jersey, one of our flyers or a RIP KID t-shirt.

CLICK THE ABOVE PHOTOS TO ENLARGE.

Michael Baron allowed me to use the photo of myself and the one of Johan Santana. Unfortunately I’m texting in my photo, but to my credit the ceremony didn’t begin yet. I’d hate to be that guy.

Johan had his RIP KID shirt on all day and was seen before and after the game rocking it during his interviews. It’s such a great feeling to be the link between the t-shirts and the charity and I can’t thank the Mets players enough for wearing them. THANK YOU GUYS!

WPIX: The7Line in the stands

by Darren on April 2nd, 2012 at 10:14 am

Two fans in our shirts got some TV time during yesterday’s WPIX Mets broadcast.

The first was the popular SELL THE TEAM shirt seated next to Kevin Burkhardt during an interview in the stands and the second was our F PHILLY shirt worn by a photographer while Hairston was doing some warm up swings.

We unloaded a ton of tees this off season. Can’t wait to see the fans decked out this year at Citi Field. LGM!

Wilpon/Katz: Sell The Team?

by Darren on March 20th, 2012 at 10:26 pm

Love em or hate em every Met fan has an opinion on our teams ownership. With yesterdays settlement actually giving the Wilpons/Katz an opportunity to MAKE money off this deal it’s apparent we are stuck in this relationship. The above photo of me ran in today’s New York Times. The photo (from last season at Citi Field) really has nothing to do with the story but hey, they chose to run it and free press is the best kind.

Since I am in no way a conventional sports blogger that posts about prospects, lineups, injuries and team news I had no comment to yesterdays story. I make t-shirts and am a part of the fan base. My “opinion” about the suit wouldn’t really be of interest to anyone.

I’ve never met the Fred, Jeff or Saul and can’t say I wouldn’t like them if given the chance.  One thing I do firmly believe is that as business men I do not agree with their decisions. This team would not be in the dire straights they are in if it wasn’t for the numerous bad contracts and the eventual ponzi scheme blowup.

The Reyes story is dead, and talking about it is quite frankly a waste of words. He’s gone, get over it. The majority of Mets fans would love to have him, and I believe if we had different owners he’d still be our homegrown SS. Not to mention the insane payroll cut and countless other terrible business moves over the years that they have allowed. Who can forget that Bobby Bonilla contract… yea, great deal! Time to turn the page and hope the young blood in the system are the stars of tomorrow.

What got me  from yesterday was Fred saying to the Mets fans “stick with us, we’ll be there, we have done it before twice in the 33 years and we’ll do it again”. As die hard fans we’ll stick with the METS but asking the fans to “stick with” the ownership… that request is FAR gone. You’ve lost this fan base long ago Fred.

I’m a business man for the fans of the team I love. My fan interaction is crucial because I am not only trying to network together like minded individuals who love the Mets, I am also trying to make sure they feel appreciated because I am in business BECAUSE OF THEM. If I treated potential customers/fans/friends like crap who would want to buy my product? That’s a simple concept that I think some business owners fail to remember. Especially when they are millionaires. Case in point, the Mets ownership. I see myself as a fan who is rallying around the idea of this fan base staying strong…. of course while having fun and keeping a sense of humor during these hard times.

The SELL THE TEAM idea is most likely a pipe dream, but the message speaks volumes even though the odds of that actually happening are slim to none. We can support our Mets until the day we die regardless of agreeing with the teams financial business decisions. Who’s to say that new owners would be the best move? My question.. can they be much worse? I’d say probably not. The SELL THE TEAM message simply states that we don’t agree.

Today I posted this saying that I’d make 11 of them if anyone was interested. I can sell them as a pack and you’d just tell me the sizes. If anyone is interested shoot me an email by clicking the CONTACT button above. Standing in line along the Shea Bridge in the outfield would for sure draw some attention.

I love baseball and will still be at just as many games as I have in past years. The die hard Met fan is as loyal as they come. There is no such thing as a Mets bandwagon fan in 2012, and I’m excited to get to Citi Field this April just as much as I was before any other season in my 31 years of fandom. Watch THIS from SNY and tell me you don’t get excited for the season. I sure as hell do.

Keep Calm and Cheer On! LGM!

Spring Training: 1986

by Darren on January 27th, 2012 at 9:00 am

My Grandparents moved from Flushing to Florida around 1990 but in the 80′s they’d plan trips down I-95 to visit friends and catch some Mets Spring Training games. As far back as I can remember my Grandfather, “Poppy”, would be either watching the game or listening on some beat up AM radio out near the BBQ with a Meister Brau beer in hand.

My Grandma was also a fan although she’d pretend to like the Braves, calling them “her team” whenever the two would match up throughout the season. She was only joking but it would get him all riled up. It was fun.

They lived on Kissena Blvd. and Pop would hit as many games as possible until they moved down South. I’ve blogged about this before but “Pop”, John Trypuc, worked for the phone company and helped lay down all the phone lines when Shea Stadium was being built. I have photos of that too… just gotta track em down. He’d also have to check in on the place every once in a while. Testing the lines and of course getting autographs. He’d have to make sure the bullpen to dugout phone was working and filled baseballs with all the greats from the 60′s-80′s.

Here’s pop and Ron Darling. I can’t say this is at a signing event because I can picture him grabbing this photo op even if Ron was mid meal. Loving the headphones, VERY 80′s.

I’m headed down to my first Spring Training this March and although 2012 isn’t looking like 1986 it’s sure to be a great time. Ya never know what may happen! Don’t count out our roster just yet. Stranger things have happened. YA GOTTA BELIEVE! LGM!
