My Grandparents moved from Flushing to Florida around 1990 but in the 80′s they’d plan trips down I-95 to visit friends and catch some Mets Spring Training games. As far back as I can remember my Grandfather, “Poppy”, would be either watching the game or listening on some beat up AM radio out near the BBQ with a Meister Brau beer in hand.
My Grandma was also a fan although she’d pretend to like the Braves, calling them “her team” whenever the two would match up throughout the season. She was only joking but it would get him all riled up. It was fun.
They lived on Kissena Blvd. and Pop would hit as many games as possible until they moved down South. I’ve blogged about this before but “Pop”, John Trypuc, worked for the phone company and helped lay down all the phone lines when Shea Stadium was being built. I have photos of that too… just gotta track em down. He’d also have to check in on the place every once in a while. Testing the lines and of course getting autographs. He’d have to make sure the bullpen to dugout phone was working and filled baseballs with all the greats from the 60′s-80′s.
Here’s pop and Ron Darling. I can’t say this is at a signing event because I can picture him grabbing this photo op even if Ron was mid meal. Loving the headphones, VERY 80′s.
I’m headed down to my first Spring Training this March and although 2012 isn’t looking like 1986 it’s sure to be a great time. Ya never know what may happen! Don’t count out our roster just yet. Stranger things have happened. YA GOTTA BELIEVE! LGM!
The 1986 season gets beat like a dead horse to us Mets fans, but since that was the teams last shining light people tend to hold on to it. The cocky demeanor held by the players brought a swag to Queens that will be remembered forever. They talked the talk but were one out away from ending the season in 2nd place. Hope was lost, defeat was in the air and Hernandez was already drinking a beer when Carter started the magical 10th inning 2 out rally. The rest is history.
As seen on MetsPolice.com earlier today from the Last Play at Shea:
Depending on the response these may go on sale TONIGHT. Let me know what you think. If you’re into it LIKE this post or leave a comment. Thank you!
Besides the occasional pie in the face most baseball teams lost the fun aspect to the game. These days you never see fun spirited players like this in the dugout. I don’t know if it’s a crack down from the higher ups, but when a team is united they work like a machine. The pranks in the 80′s loosened the boys up and we all know the results of 1986. Bring the fun back!
Why do you think the times have changed? No fun policy in the dugout?
Steiner Sports in the Roosevelt Field mall is hosting a signing with Darryl Strawberry, Bobby Ojeda and OUR CALENDAR GIRLS!
Roosevelt Field is the largest high-end shopping mall in the state of New York and eighth in the country. The mall is located in East Garden City, New York part of the Town of Hempstead on Long Island.
Steiner is charging $70 per ticket for Darryl Strawberry and Bobby Ojeda’s signatures. That also includes a calendar and the opportunity to meet all of the Calendar Girls and have them sign your copy. If you just want the calendar that will be $10.
The event will be set up right at the bottom of the food court escalators on the first floor. Right near the entrance to Dicks Sporting goods.
This is a huge deal for our Calendar Girls and The 7 Line. Please try to make it! Tell your friends and spread the Facebook invite around.
It’s clear I’ve been slacking on the “Photo Of The Day” for this website. Lots has been going on and what I hoped to update daily has become more like weekly.
This past Saturday night after a full day of Calendar shoots I walked into a surprise 31st birthday party at my parents place. I thought I was going to the ballet, yes the ballet (with a stop at my parents house because my mom wanted to see my girlfriends outfit) and quickly realized we had a change of plans when everyone yelled “SURPRISE!”. Last year was my 30th, a more customary age for a surprise party, but without naming names… someone dropped the ball.
This year my girlfriend (Kelly) and Mom organized the birthday a couple weeks before my birthday (Nov 8th) so I’d have no speculation. Also planning it on a weekend when I had a million other things going on with work kept me oblivious.
My buddy JP gave me these two old school 1986 RC Cola cans that were sold after the WS Championship. They are a must have for any collector and I can’t thank him enough for giving them to me. He remembered storing them away in his Moms attic years ago and went through the trouble to dig them out for me. Thank you JP, Kelly, my parents, family and friends for celebrating my 30th just one year late haha.
CHEERS!
This Friday is the 1986 NYM 25th anniversary at Strawberry’s Sports Grill!
If you’ve ordered anything from us over the past month or so you’ve seen this flyer in with your package…. if not here are the details:
7:00-9:30 pm $599 gets you in the door for the private party. Open bar, dinner, meet/greet with the players in attendance along with 1 item that will be signed by a minimum of 15 players from the 1986 championship team.
Now we understand the price tag may be a bit steep for most of our bank accounts, but if you factor in everything included along with the signed piece of memorabilia it sweetens the deal a bit. That item alone with 15 signatures has to go for close to $500 so it’s a win/win if you can afford it.
To purchase tickets call (718) 575-9500

LGM!
Mex hangin with Rodney Dangerfield in the 80′s. Not sure of the story behind this but a classic shot none the less.
Howard Johnson, better known to us as Hojo was at Strawberry’s last night doing a meet and greet with the fans. Strawberry’s is always busy on a normal Friday so as you’d expect having a WS Champion in the house would draw even more of a crowd.
I showed up around 6pm and the place was already packed out. Standing room only with a line out the door. Luckily we chose a spot towards the end end of the bar, which happened to be where they started the line up to get your items signed.
I ransacked my parents attic earlier in the day looking through all my old baseball cards, calendars and other goods for something to get signed but I decided on this original 1986 NL Champs sweatshirt that belonged to my grandfather.
“Poppy” watched almost every game after the 1986 season in this sweatshirt. Middle of summer and 95 degrees out? The sweatshirt was on. When I was growing up my Grandparents lived on Kissena Blvd in Flushing and if there was a game on he was glued to it. Meister Braubeer in hand and Planters unsalted peanuts next to him. That tall glass jar with the yellow cap. I remember it vividly like it was yesterday.
My grandfathers are the reason I became a Met fan and I felt it was fitting to start getting players from that team to start signing it.Hojo was the first and was happy to throw his John Hancock on it.
Howard made sure to make time for every fan. Signed whatever you brought, took photos and was a pleasure to meet. The event was very organized and everyone involved did a great job giving the fans enough time to meet Howard and not feel rushed.
I gave him one of the Carter tshirts that I printed up with On The Black and he was really appreciative to have it. I explained that we sent over $2,600 so far to the Gary Carter Foundation and he said it was great that the fans are doing something to give back.
Living so close to Strawberry’s gives me the opportunity to meet players that I looked up to as a youngster. I’ll have this sweatshirt with me from now on when I hear that one of the superstars of the 80′s will be in town.
Thanks for the fun night Strawberry’s! If you guys haven’t been there yet their next big event is on August 13th for Douglaston Community Day. Come on down! They expect thousands of people to show up for a huge block party. Batting cages, dunk tank, food, music, fun…. AND Darryl invited his friends to come down. Doc Gooden will be there along with a few more ex players. More details coming soon.
