Tag Archives: Jose Reyes

Yesterday CBS New York ran a story on their website about the possibility of the Mets preparing a long term deal for David Wright.
What’s crazy about the story is that they actually opened it with two paragraphs about me and The 7 Line in reference to last year with the “Don’t Trade Reyes” campaign.
“Remember last season’s day in, day out Jose Reyes drama?
It seems The 7 Line entrepreneur Darren Meenan’s popular “Don’t Trade Reyes” sign could be seen nightly at Citi Field. After the deadline, some Mets fans wore T-shirts imploring their All-Star shortstop to “Please Stay Jose.” Of course, when it was all said and done, Reyes signed with Miami. He never even received a formal offer from New York.
The ballpark in Flushing may look and feel the same this summer with another homegrown superstar’s future in question.
Then again, maybe it won’t.”
Just goes to show the power a t-shirt and some signs can have over the local big market media. I don’t use the word “power” as an ego thing… the fans are what spread the word. They had the power to get the message out to every ball park the Mets played in last summer. I got the ball rolling and everyone ran with it. Fans showed up in Detroit, LA, Texas, Florida, Washington and a few other parks with their own shirts and signs blaring. People united over this movement and it was awesome to see so much motivation and passion from the fans.
As we all know the Mets didn’t trade Reyes. They also didn’t sign him so the point was made but the end result wasn’t what we had hoped. It was crazy to see how fast it spread and it’s even crazier that it’s still getting press almost a year later.
I truly hope the Mets sign Wright. Some people are nervous that this fast start won’t last and the second he signs a deal his numbers will plummet. Odds are this pace wont go to October without some cold streaks, which is expected, but either way Wright is a leader whether the team is winning or losing. You surely won’t see a Francisco meltdown from Wright. We need someone like him in the lineup and clubhouse day in and day out. A cool head from a man that tries to say and do the right thing. We have potential to build around Wright and let the pieces come together to get back on top.
PAY WRIGHT! LGM!

Lots of mixed emotions last night at the ballpark. As I walked in Citi Field I saw more than a few confused fans wearing Reyes Mets jerseys with Miami Marlins hats. They weren’t in the same group of friends, so more than a few people had that same twisted idea, whatever that may be.
A large group of Reyes supporters were down the LF line and roared as he came out to stretch. I settled down in section 109 near the Mets warming up and few of the players stopped to check out my sign. Pretty sure Wright pointed it out to Ruben and Murphy smiled and tossed me up a ball. I guess the players have the same feeling.
Enough with the Reyes media frenzy. He’s been gone since December and it’s time to finally move on and get behind our boy Ruben. I was front and center trying to rally behind Reyes, but there is no use crying over spilt milk. I’d love to have him but since he’s gone I’m just as happy to see him go 0-4 in his return.
I filmed the pre-game video tribute and was curious what the reaction would be. With so much talk about this I thought more people would care to watch, but I guess it’s really just the media who needed some extra hype about the game. Most people missed it or had no reaction; some boos but mostly cheers. Reyes tipped his cap, the game began and he ALMOST led off with a HR. You know damn well the beat reporters were hoping that cleared the wall. Lucky for us Captain Kirk got a good jump and chalked up out #1. (photo by Gordon Donovan)
During the game a few JOSE chants could be heard (@Pessimets_ ) , some fans waved dollar bills in the air during his last at bat and boos echoed when he recorded outs against us at SS.
As per usual there was no run support for Johan but great to see him have a solid outing after getting roughed up last week. In the end Mets scored late to give him the ND and Rauch the W.
Mets win, Reyes and the Marlins lose…. I like the sound of that. Now somebody go put a jinx on the Nationals before they run away with this shit!
Since I was such a supporter of Jose Reyes staying with the Mets last season people have been asking my opinion on how I’ll feel when he’ll return this Tuesday.
Will I boo? No. Will I cheer? I don’t think so.
I don’t think it’s right that the Mets are playing a video tribute before the game. Playing that is pretty much telling the fans that we should clap by jamming it down their throats. I understand it’s customary to play when an ex player comes back to town. That being said the Mets haven’t had a player like this leave in a long time. Piazza was a different story because he was near the end of his career and not playing for a division rival. Reyes is still in the prime of his career, if his legs stay healthy.
Not saying how anyone else should feel but personally I’m not mad at Jose. He is a talent in the league that deserved to be paid. The Mets couldn’t afford him and made NO OFFER. The Marlins did and now he’s gone. Taking himself out of the last game? I didn’t like that, but what can we do about it now? Jose didn’t know that was going to be his last AB when he layed down the bunt in the bottom of the 1st. He should have at least went out for the 2nd inning if they were going to take him out of the game. That way the fans could have given him a hearty ovation that would have eventually been his send off.
Deal with it and move on. He now plays for the enemy and once the game starts he is just another guy in an opposing uniform.
It took me a while, but after watching the depressing episode of Mets Yearbook 2011 on SNY the reality has really sunk in. Jose is obviously gone and although I’ll always have love for him as a player, like it or not, he is now the enemy.
The NL East is stacked against the Mets this coming year. Looks to be another rough season, but we do have some bright tools on our team that may surprise us all.
As usual: HOPE FOR THE BEST, EXPECT THE WORST.
LGM!
This picture means a lot to me. It was published in the Daily News and my buddy Nick (sitting next to me in his Don’t Trade Reyes t-shirt) was nice enough to contact the paper to get me a print. I never met Nick until that night but he “liked” The 7 Line page and had an extra ticket for the game. We met up outside the rotunda and I quickly realized our seats were SICK!
The 7 Line seems like a family of fans to me so it wasn’t weird at all to sit with a stranger, his brother and their friend. I had already been in some heat over my previous sign having my website address on it so I came armed with this one, without the .com… a print out of the t-shirt design. We were sitting in prime real estate and I popped up any time Reyes was at bat or walking off the field. He’d point, wave and smile. Pretty cool that he recognized and appreciated it.
Nick swung by my shop to hand deliver the print about a week later and I decided to bring it with me to a game. I can’t say who got me the signature because I’m pretty sure they went out on a limb for me, but after BP I handed it over the railing at Citi Field and the unnamed person brought it in the dugout. Reyes looked at the photo laughed and said “this guys here?” he smiled and signed it.
The Don’t Trade Reyes movement spread like wildfire and I have the press to thank for that. Daily News ran my photo so much that people were questioning if I had a friend or family member on the inside. NY1 came by the shop as well as Mets Weekly on SNY. They really gave this story legs and I sold hundreds upon hundreds of this specific Don’t Trade Reyes t-shirt.
Yes, I made money off this but it wasn’t something that was for publicity or to get my name out there. It just happened to be something I believed in and since I had an already strong fan base it took off. Fellow Mets fans around the world embraced the idea and people were buying shirts on the other side of the world who never intended to wear it to a game. Bottom line… if I didn’t own a brand I’d be showing off the same signs trying my best to get other fans behind it. I am a die hard fan and have been since birth. It’s only fitting that other fans support one of their own.
Signs started popping up EVERYWHERE. Atlanta, Texas, D.C., LA, Florida, Detroit… pretty much anywhere the Mets played on the road there was a fan with a shirt and sign. Reyes knew they were there and appreciated it.
This brand isn’t just about t-shirt sales. It’s a awesome feeling to connect with other fans who have similar feelings towards our players and organization. Sure, it’s great to profit off something you work so hard on, but there are plenty of people who’d consider themselves part of The 7 Line army without even owning a shirt. It’s a family business. When someone brings up the fan base in conversation and they ask “Hey, you know about The 7 Line?” they instantly have something in common.
Maybe you were a part of the Don’t Trade Reyes rally on the Shea Bridge this past season. If you were, you were part of history. It’s crazy that something I started 2 years ago in my basement turned into something for the record books. This isn’t me patting myself on the back, it’s just the truth. If there was a book published about Reyes, that fan movement would be part of it.. maybe not a chapter but at least a couple paragraphs.
So in the end Reyes isn’t a Met anymore. I’m sad about it, but at least I have this to remember. Nick ended up becoming a friend after that night at Citi Field and I can’t thank him enough for going out of his way to get me that picture. I’ll have it hung in my house forever.
The Mets fan base are a loyal bunch. I just wish I could say the same for ownership. You’d think I would bite my tongue about bad mouthing the organization with hopes of one day getting licensing for The 7 Line brand. To tell you the truth, I can care less… this brand is about the fans. SELL THE TEAM!
John Montone over at CBS radio 1010 WINS caught wind of our new t-shirt design and came by for an interview.
Although they say we failed at keeping the Mets from trading Reyes (he wasn’t traded… they let him walk) you get the point. Reyes is no longer a Met and the only ones to blame are the Wilpons, their financial situation and lack of care for this team and their fans. I understand the Mets not wanting to give Reyes a super contract that would keep him here for another 6 years on iffy legs. The fans deserved at least an OFFER. An attempt to keep Jose for less money. Let Reyes decide to stay for 80 mill and 4 years. At that point it would have been on Jose’s shoulders to make a decision.
As fans, we feel jipped. They didn’t trade him by the deadline leading us to believe that they cared enough to at least make an offer after the season. They didn’t… and now Jose is gone without a fight.
In Jose’s own words “It’s not my fault… they no show me nothing.. I had to move on”. Can’t blame the guy. Was he supposed to retire if the Mets made no offer?
Thank you to 1010 WINS for giving us a voice. You can also read the story on their website HERE.

This isn’t our Mess but we’ll stand behind it.
I guess the children are our future. The Mets might field a World Series championship team by the time little Joey here is old enough to legally drink.
As you all know Reyes is a goner. I’m actually pretty shocked that some people look to me like I have any kind of answer to this mess. Immediately after the news broke I was bombarded with e-mails, texts, tweets and Facebook posts from fans saying/asking “wheres your stupid shirts now”…
The Reyes movement wasn’t about t-shirts. It was about Met fans coming together and spreading the word through the rest of the fan base. Signs and shirts popped up at every home and away series from June until the end of the season. I am happy to have been behind a movement that spread that far. Our message was heard, but in the end Reyes is gone. The fan base is strong. It was not a failure.
The only failure in this is how Sandy and ownership went about it. Instead of making an offer they chose to let other teams set the bar. To my knowledge the Marlins were the only ones throwing a dollar # out there. The initial buzz a few weeks ago had me thinking there was no way in hell Reyes was going to Florida. I figured it was the Marlins blowing smoke to get some buzz around their team and the new stadium. Well, I was wrong.
I personally think 6 years is too long to dedicate towards an injury prone player. I am not one of those fans that wanted him to stay bad enough thinking the Mets should have committed every dime they had to an extensive contract worth that many years. Does that mean I don’t want him on the team? Of course not, Jose is clearly one of my favorite players.
Boycott Citi Field? That’s just dumb. I will still be at Citi cheering on the orange and blue no matter who is wearing the uniforms. Reyes is irreplaceable but one player does not make a team.
After hearing the Mets made no effort to even make an offer… that’s the only failure in this. You can’t blame Reyes for leaving. The Mets didn’t even try.
I can’t / don’t want to picture this team without #7 on the roster. People are losing faith and you can’t help but get a weird feeling in your gut hearing all the rumors.
This was taken on a summer getaway day (Thursday day game) in the blistering heat. The jersey was burning me up so I decided to drape it over my Loge level section 17 railing. How that guy (right side, khaki color hat) has one of those rastafarian beanie hats on is behind me… temps had to be in the mid 90′s with absolutely no shade. I’d pass out with that much added heat on my brain.
Miss those days at Shea. LGM!
Got an awesome mention today on the CBS New York website. It’s pretty crazy that The 7 Line and Jose Reyes are synonomis when taking about the possibility of a trade during this past season and now the free agency.
The “Don’t Trade Reyes” movement was huge and I’m happy that I helped give the fans a voice throughout the world. There were signs at every game, home and on the road. Fans in other countries even bought the shirts with no intentions of going to a game. Our common message spread that far and it’s because of the die-hards that The 7 Line is even respected in the media. Together we are community of loyal fans and they obviously heard our cheers.
Thank you to CBS for mentioning the campaign and acknowledging the fans. Hopefully we (the fans) made enough noise during the season. The little bird on Jose’s shoulder is still chirping PLEASE STAY JO-SE in his ear while he is counting those extra zeros on the impending offers…. hopefully he hears it. STAY IN NY!
