It's Time For Fans To Put Respect Back on Edwin Diaz's Name

A guest blog from Al Cintron:

So, what is it going to take for Mets fans to embrace Edwin Diaz? 100 saves with a 0.00 ERA? Wait, I know, how about starting and closing games and winning a Cy Young award along with the MVP in the same season? That MIGHT do it.

The hate towards Edwin Diaz has been so over the top, especially after last season. He redeemed himself in 2020, and so far, it has carried over to this Spring. Meanwhile, way too many fans trip over themselves, loving a guy who was traded for Diaz and has never played a single Big League game.

Go ahead and google MLB closers stats and you'll quickly realize Sugar Diaz is easily a top 5 closer in the game. In 2019, Diaz was abysmal, and he deserved to feel the wrath from the fan base, but he bounced back big time in 2020. I feel like in this city, everyone, regardless of what team you root for, will compare whoever the closer is to Mariano Rivera, and that's not fair at all. Rivera is the greatest of all time and speaking for Met fans, it's time to let that comparison go. Closers blow games. It happens. Let's stop acting like Diaz is a Mel Rojas. His filthy stuff has returned ever since Jeremy Hefner took over as pitching coach.

I know there were free agents people wanted. Hand and Hendriks WANTED TO BE CLOSERS. They weren't signing with the Mets this offseason, so stop crying, and they're not better than Diaz. Yeah, I said it, and I will die on this hill for as long as Diaz is our closer. Edwin is our closer. That's our guy whether you like it or not so instead of acting like a bunch of stalkers showering Kelenic with love every single damn day on Twitter, who, by the way, is injured and out until further notice, show Diaz that love. He's earned some of it back after last season. Seeing the way he's performed thus far in Spring, he's shutting down batters and shutting down the haters in 2021.

We need more love and less hate from the fan base. It's time for a new attitude for Diaz's new beginnings.
