MPOTD: Shea Stadium Home Plate

MPOTD: Shea Stadium Home Plate

Back in 2011 I'd post a different photo of the day. No real rhyme or reason besides having to do with the Mets. Not really reinventing the wheel on this one, but I'll start picking one a day to post that I think you guys might like. Mets Photo Of The Day, MPOTD for short.

First up is this pic from a girl names Marisa. Not stalking her out, but from looks of her feed, she's at the ballpark this weekend for The Meadows Music & Arts Festival

I hoped the team would have left a wall up from Shea. Border it off and make it a destination spot for fans and tourists. Alas, that didn't happen, but they did map out the base path and added plaques. Pretty cool alternate. Now you can hang for a photo, play wiffle ball where the legends stood or just reminisce about all the good times.

Unfortunately a lot of fans walk past and don't bat an eye. Not even realizing they're walking over sacred ground. If you've never been to the park, take a few extra minutes to go pay your respects.

Anyway, shout to Marisa. Have fun.

I left NY in 2007, and was sad when the Mets couldn’t make it to the WS in the old building. Many fond memories, including attending both Game 6 of ’86 and the infamous Grand Slam Single NLCS Game 5 in 1999. It was a dump, but it was our dump. My first MLB game was at Shea in 1971, when I was 12, with my dad. The LA Dodgers beat us 4-1, and I was shocked when my father called my hero, Cleon Jones, a “crybaby.” So many great games from Seaver, Gooden, etc. Miss that era!

I left New York in 07, but I still follow the Mets every day (thanks to MLB.tv). When I do visit I make sure I catch a game when I can. I took a similar photo with my wife and daughter, and the home plate looked a lot better. I hope ownership sees how important things like this are to Mets fans. Let’s just hope this doesn’t turn into how ownership treats the team right now; ignoring it instead of giving it a polish once in a while.

Shameful how many people walk on and about that diamond not even aware of what’s below their feet.
